Changing sales logic in the functional beverage market and the debut of the new SIP brand

The beverage market in Poland is undergoing a deep transformation. The traditional approach, where price or taste was the main deciding factor in product choice, is giving way to new rules of the game. This is clearly visible in the example of the dynamic growth of the functional beverage segment and "on-the-go" consumption (on the run, during the day).

A perfect reflection of these changes is the return of creators known from the Purella and BeRAW brands, who – supported, among others, by Ewa Chodakowska’s close associates – are introducing a new brand of beverages, SIP, to the market. The debut of this project was discussed in "Puls Biznesu" by Patryk Górczyński, Managing Director of the IQFM Group, who analyzed how consumer decision-making mechanisms and the strategy of brand presence in retail are changing.

From quenching thirst to function

The modern consumer is no longer just looking for refreshment. Reaching for the beverage shelf, they choose a product tailored to a specific moment of the day and a strictly defined need.

In the category of so-called task-oriented beverages – such as:

  • takeaway coffee,
  • energy drinks,
  • modern isotonics and iced teas, – the boundaries of traditional categories are blurring. These products compete with each other directly, and the final choice is decided by function: stimulation, concentration, relaxation, or hydration. The importance of utility itself and the benefits flowing from the product is growing, pushing pure price competition into the background.

The convenience channel as the key to purchasing decisions

A key area where these changes are visible most quickly is the convenience channel. It is developing dynamically, taking over an increasing share of daily, impulsive shopping.

In convenience retail conditions, the consumer makes a purchasing decision instantly – often within a few seconds. From the manufacturer's and merchant's perspective, this means a complete change of priorities:

  • Shelf availability – the product simply has to be there when the customer needs it.
  • Exposure and visibility – standing out in a crowded category requires perfect merchandising.
  • Clear function communication – the customer must immediately know what benefit a given drink brings.

The case of the SIP brand and market development

The entry of the SIP brand onto the Polish market – including a strong debut in the Żabka chain – shows how modern FMCG brands are built today. The creators of the project rely not only on product innovation but from the beginning plan rapid growth both in Poland and on international markets.

As retail market experts note, functionality in itself does not guarantee an automatic price premium. However, it can effectively justify it provided there is a precise fit to consumption occasions and a credible, transparent communication of benefits. Without this, the product easily returns to destructive price competition within its category.

How to win in the functional beverage market

The development of brands such as SIP and the evolution of shopping behaviors in the convenience channel show that success in the beverage industry requires strategic thinking that goes beyond traditional marketing.

For manufacturers, this means the necessity of investing in:

  • precise targeting of consumer needs (on-the-go),
  • excellent visibility at points of sale (POS),
  • a strong purchasing context where the product's function meets customer expectations at the right place and time.
